DataChat provides several ways to load data. In this chapter, we'll step through how to load data into a new DataChat session for analysis – from a file downloaded onto your computer and from the internet.
Download a file onto your computer. Go to https://tinyurl.com/DataChatTraining and click on "PPP Restaurant Revitalization Fund" to download "PPP_Aid_to_Restaurants.xlsx".
Open DataChat. From the homepage, click the New button.
When you first start DataChat, a new session automatically opens the Load Data form, in Grid mode. To turn off this behavior and change default settings, visit Settings > Sessions.
When you've been using DataChat for a while, the Files, Snapshots, Databases, and Workflows sections of the Load Data form fill with recommendations based on your commonly used objects.
Click load data from my files. The Load a File form appears.
DataChat is pre-loaded with files you can load to explore your data. but the "PPP_Aid_to_Restaurants.xlsx" file we downloaded is not yet loaded into DataChat. To do this, click the Upload a new file button. The File Upload form appears.
If you choose to browse for your file, it will open your machine's file browser. If you exit the file browser, you can drag and drop the file from your computer into the page.
DataChat prompts you to load "PPP_Aid_to_Restaurants.xlsx" into the current session. Select the file and click Confirm. The new session loads with data. For files that contain more than one dataset—such as Excel files with multiple sheets or .zip files with multiple datasets—the "All Datasets" table appears and lists the datasets contained within.
You're ready to start analysis. Or, load your own datasets!
Open DataChat. From the homepage, click on the New button.
When you first start DataChat, a new session automatically opens the Load Data form, in Grid mode. To change default settings, visit Settings > Sessions.
To load a file from the internet, use a link that points the browser to one of the file types accepted into DataChat. One example is https://github.com/nytimes/covid-19-data/raw/master/us-states.csv.
Enter the URL into the External URL field of the Load Data form and click Submit. The new session loads with data if the URL is valid.
