Files

File Types

DataGrid supports the following file types:

  • Comma-separated values (.csv)
  • Excel (.xlsx)
note

Datasets can contain at most 1600 columns.

By default, DataChat comes with 4 datasets:

  • telcoCustomerChurn.csv. Dataset from a telecommunications company on customer retention.
  • Credit_Risk.csv.. Dataset on lending and default likelihood for credit users.
  • Heart_Health.csv. Dataset about key indicators of heart disease.
  • Hotel_Reservations.csv. Dataset about online hotel reservation platforms and their relationship to the booking landscape and customer behavior.

Upload Files

Uploading a file into DataChat is the easiest way to get started and is a better option when working with small, static, or one-off datasets.

For best data handling, we recommend the following:

  • Use descriptive file names
  • Use accurate column headers
  • Use one table per sheet
  • Align the table to be in the upper-left corner
  • Remove any empty columns and rows

From the Homepage

To upload your files into DataChat from outside a session:

  1. From the homepage, select New > File.

  2. The Upload Files form appears. Drag and drop the file, or select Browse to open your machine's file browser.

  3. You can also open, share, move, hide and delete your uploaded files from the Files section in the sidebar.

Within a Session

To upload files from within a DataChat session, select Load > Load Data in the sidebar. The Load Data form appears.

Once you've started using DataChat, the Files section populates with your commonly used files. Click on any file to load the file into the session. If your file isn't listed, you can either Upload a new file or Search my files.

Upload a New File

To upload a new file into your session:

  1. Click Upload a new file.

  2. Either drag and drop your file, or browse your local machine.

  3. Once completed, the window automatically closes and loads the file into the session. If you replaced an existing file, close the window and search for your file.

Search My Files

To search for an existing file:

  1. Click Search my files.

  2. Select the file you'd like to load, then click Submit.

Upload Multiple Files at Once

To upload multiple files at once, enter Load data from the datasets <datasets> in the GEL Input Field.

Load Data From a URL

Uploading data from a URL also creates datasets so you can easily load them again in other sessions.

To upload datasets from a URL:

  1. Click the Load button.
  2. Enter the URL to load.
  3. Click Submit.

For example, to upload the "Covid-19" dataset, you can enter https://github.com/datasets/covid-19/blob/main/data/key-countries-pivoted.csv in the External URL field.

Optionally can also enter in the GEL input field: Load data from the URL <url>

Load Data From Google Drive

Loading data from Google Drive also uploads those files to DataChat, so you can easily load them again in other sessions.

You can allow DataChat to load data from your Google Drive by authenticating it with Google and then loading data from the Google Drive URL.

In the GEL input field:

  1. Enter Authenticate with Google Drive. This opens a new browser tab.
  2. Select the Google account to use.
  3. Click Allow to let DataChat access your Google Drive files. You're then redirected back to your session in DataChat.
  4. Enter in the GEL input field: Load data from the URL <URL>, where <URL> is the URL of your file in Google Drive. Note that you must the use the URL you receive after clicking the Share button in Google Drive, but you do not need to share the file with any other accounts.
